Duna mirante project

Duna Mirante is a place of inspiration, where the ambition to create a Primitivo with a precise, uncompromising character has become a reality.

The Environment

Monaco Mirante and the Campomarino Nature Reserve

The sandy dunes of Campomarino stretch for 41 hectares along the Ionian coast in the municipality of Maruggio. Reaching heights of up to 12 meters above sea level, they originated approximately 7,500 to 3,300 years ago and are among the most imposing and well-preserved in Italy. The slopes are colonized by lush, fragrant, spontaneous Mediterranean scrub composed of juniper, mastic, thyme, helichrysum, sea fennel, rosemary, myrtle, and eucalyptus. This environment of rich plant biodiversity possesses scents and essences that influence the aromatic profile of the adjacent Primitivo vines. In 1995, the Campomarino Dunes Nature Park was established to ensure their protection.

The sea

The sea is only 400 meters from the vineyards. Its proximity has a significant influence on the vines, enriching their aromatic spectrum with marine and briny notes. The sand dunes situated between the vineyard and the sea offer a natural barrier during days of strong winds and storms.

Sun and wind

Constant winds are a defining characteristic of this location. Whether they blow from the North/North-East (such as the Tramontana and Maestrale) or from the South (the Scirocco), they ensure a balanced microclimate and preserve the quality of the grapes. Furthermore, the numerous long, sunny days favor perfect ripening.

The vineyard grows on soils of varying compositions.

These are well-defined plots, each with its own characteristics in terms of composition and structure, which can be observed through the different colors of the earth.

Near the dunes, the soil is light and primarily sandy; moving inland, the earth becomes more reddish with a finer texture that includes silt and clay.

Primitivo at Duna Mirante

We are in the Manduria area, where Primitivo reaches its maximum expression.

The presence of plots with different soils led to the selection of diverse Primitivo clones to find the best bio-balance between the land and the vines. For each plot, we conduct a micro-vinification—small productions used to fully understand the potential and expression of each one.

This is essential raw material for our winemaker to produce a wine that represents the true essence of this vineyard.
